Operating Characteristics of Cranes

1. The industrial-cranes can do hosting and horizontal movements because its giant structure and complex mechanism. For example, the overhead cranes have the function of hosting, crane traveling and trolley traveling; gantry cranes can do hoisting, amplitude of variation, turns and crane traveling. During the process of operation, we always adopt movement of different directions synchronously which needs sophisticated skills.

2. The loading capacity of the cranes changes with the diverse weight. The weight of the load ranges from hundreds of tons to thousands of tons; the length maybe more than ten meters with irregular shape; the load might be granular, melting, flammable, explosive etc. All of these makes the process of hoisting complicated and hazardous.

3. Most of cranes need a relatively huge space to operate. Some of them need rail laying and wheels (for example the tower cranes, bridge cranes etc); some are equipped with tyres and crawler belts like the truck cranes and crawler cranes; some cranes rely on wire ropes such as passenger transport, freight transport, cable-way, which need larger activity space. Or in other terms, it will cost greatly if accidents happen.

4. Workers should work on the guide rail, platform or wire ropes to operate the hoisting mechanism, like elevators, lift platforms. The reliability of the cranes is directly related to the personal safety.

5. There are many components and parts of the cranes are exposed outside, and the workers have more direct contact with the parts (such as hooks, wire ropes), which have potential dangers for the workers.

6. The cranes are widely used in large steel integrated complex, modern harbors, construction sites, railway terminals, tourist resorts and so on. So it is easy to get to the working conditions of high temperature, high pressure, inflammable, explosive, electric transmission lines, strong magnetism. And such hazards of the complicated working environment pose potential threats to the operating personnel and equipment.

7. Operations of the crane need cooperation of workers, that is to say the conductor, the operator and the one who is responsible for banding should be familiar to each other and can coordinate the work together.

The operating characteristics of cranes as above illustrate the close relations between the crane and safe production. If we are negligent in the design, manufacture, installation, maintenance of the crane, all of those factors may cause injuries and deaths or equipment accidents.
